Gokarna is revered as one of the seven most important pilgrimage centres of the Hindu faith, and is considered as a Shaktipeeth. Legend has it that a part of the corpse of Sati fell here while Lord Shiva was carrying it and wandering in grief. Hence, this is known as one of the significant places in Indian history.
